Best of Argolis | Full Day Private Tour.
This Best of Argolis full day private tour consists of comprehensive visits at monumental historical UNESCO landmarks and archeological sites of Ancient Mycenae, Epidavros, Ancient Corinth and the town of Nafplio.
The Argolis peninsula, which separates the Saronic and Argolic Gulfs, is steeped in legend and history. The town of Argos is thought to be the longest continually inhabited town in Greece.
Argolis was the foremost seat of power of the Mycenaeans that dominated Greece from around 1500 to 1200 BC. Traces of this mighty civilisation lie scattered across the region in the shape of tholoi (beehive-shaped tombs), citadels and ancient theatres.
On a hilltop backed by powerful mountains stand the sombre and mighty ruins of Ancient Mycenae, home of Agamemnon, the legendary king who commanded the Greeks during the Trojan War. For four centuries in the second millennium BC, this kingdom was the most powerful in Greece, holding sway over the whole region and influencing other Mycenaean cities.
Further east, in its day Epidavros was famed and revered across the Mediterranean as a place of miraculous healing. Visitors came great distances to the tranquil Sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of medicine, to seek a cure for their ailments. Today the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s amazingly well-preserved theatre remains a venue during the Athens & Epidavros Festival for Classical Greek plays, first performed here over 2300 years ago.
Last but not least, home to legendary Jason of the Argonauts, stealer of the Golden Fleece, the streets of Ancient Corinth were once trodden by the likes of Pausanias, Roman traveller, and St Paul, who taught the gospel of Christ here. Follow in their footsteps by visiting the Temple of Apollo, the Peribolos of Apollo, the ancient theatre and other highlights. The excellent on-site museum puts everything into context.
Finally, the Venetian seafront town of Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, makes a handy base for having a rest in between the surrounding countryside while exploring the Best of Argolis UNESCO sites.
